STORIES OF THE DAY

Legislators Listen Up! Jindal Says Louisiana Is Hungry For Competence!
by Congressman Bobby Jindal - The Dead Pelican (excerpt)

The budget passed by the House totals $29.6 billion dollars. This is not a typo, though it should be.

Turn the clock back to 2001 and you will find that year's budget was about $14.1 billion dollars.

The simple truth is that government spending is out of control.

There is no individual, no family, and no business that could survive with these unbridled, undisciplined, and irresponsible spending sprees.

I could not believe that when I read it, so I made a few calls. Turns out it is true. The House passed the Governor's request to create 1,000 new state government jobs in Louisiana!

These 1,000 new state government jobs are not part of any coherent plan. They are just ... 1,000 new salaries for the taxpayers to fund....every year.

I'm sorry, but this represents both incompetence and irresponsibility.

This has got to stop.

We cannot allow OUR government, both in Washington and Baton Rouge, to spend OUR money in such a cavalier manner.

I have made it clear that I'm not going to get into the legislative disputes in this session of the Louisiana state Legislature. So don't look for me to weigh in on every bill in the Legislature.

But I simply could not hold my tongue on this any longer. Someone has to speak out; someone has to speak up for the taxpayers, for responsible government, and for fiscal sanity.

As the old song says, "The winds of change, they are a blowing," and barely in time I might add.

Louisiana is desperate for real and fundamental change. Louisiana is in dire need of decisive leadership. Louisiana is hungry for competence.

With your help, we will put our great state on a new path, a path to real growth and real reform.

Oh, and one more thing, we will also treat taxpayers' money with respect.

Murder update in New Orleans
by C.B. FORGOTSTON - Forgotston.com (excerpt)
.
New Orleans has now recorded at least its 22ND murder in the first 38 days. (See the most recent. Click link above for WWL story.)
.
The 22 murders do not include "justifiable homicides" and other violent deaths. The most recent murder occurred on Tuesday night, but the report was not posted until this morning.
.
I find it interesting that WWL-TV in New Orleans is the only media outlet that consistently reports murders in New Orleans. Covering up the violence is not going to help solve the problems. Perhaps its all about not scaring the tourists.
.
The residents are on their own. More as it happens.
.
.
Term limits: Lazy Susan of politicians seeking other offices
by EDITOR - Advocate (excerpt)
.
While term limits in the Legislature will ensure that there are many new faces in the Louisiana House next year, a number of the House members who can’t run for re-election are expected to seek Senate seats. How will they fare?
.
One has attempted the feat, and Rep. William Daniel was defeated in his bid to replace state Sen. Jay Dardenne, R-Baton Rouge, who was elected secretary of state last year.
.
Physician William Cassidy helped make the term-limited Daniel’s running for the Senate an issue. “I don’t think the public intended term limits to be a Lazy Susan of politicians seeking other offices,” Cassidy said in one forum before the December special election.
.
.
Shut up and move on to other things
by EDITOR - Opelousas Daily World (excerpt)
.
As the candidates begin to make their announcements and line up support for the upcoming gubernatorial campaign and campaigns for the Louisiana legislature, we beg them to make their points about Katrina, then shut up and move on to other things.
.
Frankly, we think we are far from alone in our weariness over fingerpointing, whining, complaining, posturing and constant harping over a storm that continues to focus all of our attention and most of our money on a New Orleans area that can't or won't get its act together.
.
There are issues important to the future of all of the state that are simply being pushed aside because nobody can seem to see west of the Mississippi River or north of Baton Rouge. Hello, out there. We have needs, too.

JURY SAYS BR CASINOS LIED TO GET LICENSES

"APPARENTLY LUCK HAS LITTLE OR NOTHING TO DO WITH IT."

ADVOCATE
.
(excerpt)
.
A jury decided late Tuesday that Jazz Enterprises and Argosy Gaming withheld vital information when applying for a riverboat casino license in 1994 and ordered $3.8 million paid to a Baton Rouge company that might have received the license had the information been disclosed.
.
Charles “Chip” Lambert Jr., whose family owns Capitol House Preservation, said Wednesday his family was pleased to get its day in court after 14 years. “The essential objection we’ve made is our competitors used unfair practices to obtain the license,” Lambert said.
.
In his closing argument to jurors on Tuesday, Lambert said there were three main schemes used to defraud in this case. He said the Jazz group lied about the ownership of the company, it concealed millions of dollars it owed to various people and companies, and the group lied about what it would build if it obtained the license.
.
.
LPNS COMMENTARY: AREN'T THESE THE SAME FOLKS WHO ARE RUNNING ADS TRYING TO BLOCK THE PINNACLE RESORT PROJECT IN BR? IN THE ADS THEY ACCUSE PINNACLE OF HIDING INFORMATION FROM THE PUBLIC. THEY USE THE PHRASE "DO YOU FEEL LUCKY?" APPARENTLY, LUCK HAS LITTLE OR NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.
