JURY SAYS BR CASINOS LIED TO GET LICENSES

A jury decided late Tuesday that Jazz Enterprises and Argosy Gaming withheld vital information when applying for a riverboat casino license in 1994 and ordered $3.8 million paid to a Baton Rouge company that might have received the license had the information been disclosed.

Charles “Chip” Lambert Jr., whose family owns Capitol House Preservation, said Wednesday his family was pleased to get its day in court after 14 years. “The essential objection we’ve made is our competitors used unfair practices to obtain the license,” Lambert said.

In his closing argument to jurors on Tuesday, Lambert said there were three main schemes used to defraud in this case. He said the Jazz group lied about the ownership of the company, it concealed millions of dollars it owed to various people and companies, and the group lied about what it would build if it obtained the license.
