Detectives on Tuesday released a sketch of one of the two gunmen who killed four people nearly two months ago in a drug-related, execution-style shooting near Slidell.

Crimestoppers also doubled to $5,000 the reward for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the suspects in the June 27 slaughter, the deadliest crime in memory in St. Tammany Parish.

“I can assure you that this investigation remains very active,” Sheriff Jack Strain said while holding a copy of the sketch at a news conference Tuesday afternoon. “We are pursuing numerous leads, and we believe our actions today will generate many more leads.”

The sketch represents the first detailed information released so far about either of the suspects, who had previously been described as young black men, one with dreadlocks and the other with a “chee wee” hairstyle.

The vague descriptions became the source of controversy two days after the shootings when Strain said in a TV interview that anyone walking the streets with such hairstyles could “expect to be getting a visit from a sheriff’s deputy.”

Based on descriptions from two witnesses who survived the carnage, the sketch depicts a black man with a thin mustache and braided hair.

Responding to a question about whether it was the suspect with dreadlocks or the one with chee wees, Strain said, “We were betting whether anyone would ask that. Not being (hair stylists), we believe this is the chee wee hairstyle.”
