The leading candidates in Louisiana’s congressional 3rd District race, after a few weeks of relatively peaceful on-air coexistence, have begun blistering each other in television ads.

The campaign of incumbent U.S. Rep. Charlie Melancon, D-Napoleonville, is blasting state Sen. Craig Romero, R-New Iberia, as a millionaire who has used his elected position to enrich himself and his family. Romero, meanwhile, is painting Melancon as ethics-challenged and as having been bought off by a fellow Democrat who has been investigated for corruption.

Each candidate says the other was the first to go negative.
