BLANCO SET TO BUY MORE VOTES (WITH OUR MONEY)

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Governor Kathleen Blanco says that three of her key initiatives for the April legislative session will be to find ways to get teachers, police and firefighters pay raises.
Blanco would not say what her target raises for any of the three groups might be.

Teachers got an average one-thousand-500 dollar pay raise at the session that ended in June. That inched them closer to the Southern regional average.

State supplemental pay for firefighters and police officers has not been increased in several years, despite lawmakers' attempts to file bills almost annually to do it.

Blanco said she will not speculate on how large the raises will be until the Revenue Estimating Conference, the panel that approves the dollar figures available for budgeting, meets in December.
